Fishing Knot Guide

Welcome to the shack's knot guide. We're a family bait and tackle shop in Homestead, and we tie these knots for customers every single day. A good knot is the cheapest insurance you can buy: tie the wrong one, or tie the right one sloppy, and that fish of a lifetime swims off with your hook.

New to fishing? Start here with the Beginner knots and work your way up. Every knot has a numbered picture for each step, and the gear we'd reach for. Still stuck? Swing by the shack and we'll show you in person.

Level 1 · Start here

Beginner knots

Five knots that cover almost everything: tying on hooks, lures and swivels, making a loop, and loading a reel.

  1. 1 Improved Clinch
  2. 2 Palomar
  3. 3 Uni Knot
  4. 4 Surgeon's Loop
  5. 5 Arbor Knot

Improved Clinch

Beginner5 steps

Use it for: line to hook, lure or swivel.

  1. Improved clinch step 1: pass the tag through the eye

Push about 6 inches of tag end through the eye of the hook, lure or swivel.

  2. Improved clinch step 2: 5 to 7 wraps

Wrap the tag around the main line 5 to 7 times (fewer for heavy line).

  3. Improved clinch step 3: through the small loop

Bring the tag back and push it through the small loop that formed just above the eye.

  4. Improved clinch step 4: back through the big loop

Now tuck the tag back through the big loop you just made. That is the "improved" part.

  5. Improved clinch step 5: wet, tighten, trim

Wet the knot, pull the main line so the wraps slide down snug against the eye, and trim the tag.

Palomar

Beginner4 steps

Use it for: line to hook or lure, great with braid.

  1. Palomar step 1: double the line and push the loop through the eye

Double about 6 inches of line and push the loop end through the eye.

  2. Palomar step 2: loose overhand with the doubled line

With the doubled line, tie a loose overhand knot. Leave the hook hanging below it.

  3. Palomar step 3: pass the loop over the hook

Pass the loop all the way over the hook (or lure) so it sits above the eye.

  4. Palomar step 4: tighten and trim

Wet it, pull the main line and tag together to tighten, then trim the tag.

Uni Knot

Beginner5 steps

Use it for: line to hook or lure, do-it-all.

  1. Uni step 1: through the eye, tag back along the main line

Run about 6 inches of tag through the eye and lay it back along the main line.

  2. Uni step 2: form a loop over both lines

Bring the tag back toward the eye to form a loop over both lines.

  3. Uni step 3: wrap through the loop around both lines

Wrap the tag through the loop and around both lines, 5 to 7 times.

  4. Uni step 4: pull the tag to snug the knot

Wet it and pull the tag to snug the wraps into a neat barrel.

  5. Uni step 5: slide the knot to the eye and trim

Pull the main line to slide the knot down to the eye, then trim the tag.

Arbor Knot

Beginner4 steps

Use it for: ties line to reel spool.

  1. Arbor step 1: pass the line around the spool

Pass the line around the reel spool (arbor) and bring the tag back out.

  2. Arbor step 2: overhand around the main line

Tie an overhand knot with the tag around the main line.

  3. Arbor step 3: stopper overhand in the tag

Tie a second overhand in the tag end only, about 1 inch past the first, as a stopper.

  4. Arbor step 4: pull the main line and trim

Wet it, pull the main line so the knot slides down tight on the spool, and trim close.

Double 2 to 4 feet of line into a long loop.

  2. Bimini twist step 2: spin the loop 20 times

Spin the loop end 20 times to put 20 twists in the doubled line.

  3. Bimini twist step 3: spread the loop so the tag rolls down over the twists

  4. Bimini twist step 4: half hitch around one leg of the loop

When the wraps reach the end, tie a half hitch around one leg of the loop.

  5. Bimini twist step 5: locking hitch around both legs, pull and trim

Use it for: joins lines of very different sizes or line to wire.

  1. Albright step 1: bend the heavy line into a narrow loop

Bend the heavy line or wire back on itself to make a narrow loop, about 3 inches long.

Slide a sleeve sized for your leader onto the line (check the sleeve chart).

  2. Crimp step 2: through the eye and back through the sleeve

Pass the tag through the eye of the hook or swivel and back through the same sleeve. Add a chafe tube for heavy mono if you like.

  3. Crimp step 3: slide the sleeve up, leave a small loop

Slide the sleeve up to leave a small loop, with the tag just past the end of the sleeve.
